The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the second-oldest church in the western hemisphere.
The original church was erected in 1521. It was a wood structure and was destryed by a hurricane in 1526. It was rebuilt of stone in 1529.
Since then it has been expanded, recuilt and embellished. Several side chapels were added.
It was delared a minor basilica on November 19, 1977.

(Hormigueros is located in the western region of the island south of Mayagüez.)
This church was named after the statue of the Virgin Mary and infant Christ venerated at the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery in the Montserrat mountain in Catalonia.
It may have been built as early as 1590.
In 1998, the Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of Minor Basílica.
