Shrines are places where people come to pray and ask for the help of Jesus,. Mary or a saint. They can be as small as grotto or as large as a basilica or cathedral.

Many of the smaller shrines were built by parishes and religious orders and although open to the public are little known and rarely visited. Other, newer shrines may have a large following but are known only to people going on pilgrimages.
